Summer days are ahead of us but also the rainy season. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to wear on a rainy day, especially during the summertime. If you live in an area like mine where it rains for the first half of the day and the other half there is sunshine then you understand how important it is to be prepared.
Rainy days can be overwhelming especially, if there is ever an unexpected downpour. This guide will help you prepare to find all the right things for a light sprinkle or a strong downpour. The wettest month of the year is June which is also at the start of summer so it’s always good to know what are the right tools to prevent slipping and getting drenched.
I know I’ve gone through those circumstances where you have to stay inside much longer than you anticipated because you were not prepared for the rain. It’s always been important for me to make sure that I take the essentials to work or school like an umbrella and extra clothes.
Here are some essential outfit ideas for rainy summer days that you will need for those light rainfalls or strong downpours.
Outfit Ideas For Rainy Summer Days
Waterproof or Water Resistant Jackets
Trench coats are so necessary for summer rain. They are lightweight and don’t have any form of insulation to form heat so they are so great to wear during the summer rainfall. You can wear short or long trench coats, it’s all up to your taste and how much you want to protect from the rain.
You can also wear any type of jacket that repels water to protect the clothes you have underneath. If you don’t own an umbrella or just don’t love the idea of handling an umbrella then making sure your trench coat or jacket has a hoodie is so essential.
I usually prefer wearing a trenchcoat or jacket that is shorter and has a hoodie. I always make sure to put my hair up that day either in a braid or in a high bun to protect my hair from getting wet or having it get frizzy.
Umbrellas
If there is rainfall then there has to be umbrellas. Umbrellas are very charming and they are a great way to protect yourself from heavy rain. There are all types of umbrellas like the travel compact umbrellas or the dome style umbrellas.
Wind is also another factor to take into consideration because it can fold and break your umbrella. We all know someone who has gone through this type of situation. If the wind is really heavy then something like a dome-style umbrella with vinyl would be much sturdier than a wide-open soft fabric umbrella.
If you are going to school or work with a friend and it’s pouring then take an extra umbrella or a really large umbrella to fit both of you. I always try to keep umbrellas handy in both my home and in my car.
Quick Drying Fabrics
Quick-drying fabrics are necessary because if you’re not prepared with a rain jacket or umbrella at least you won’t stay drenched for hours after the rain hits your clothes. Fabrics like polyester, rayon, and nylon are fabrics that dry a lot quicker than others.
Choosing clothes with polyester fabrics or other synthetic blends will make it easier to stay dry and won’t make you feel unbearable when the rain hits your clothes.
Waterproof Footwear
Wearing waterproof shoes will keep your feet dry while you’re busy trying to run errands or going to work. If you notice any rain in the forecast then take a pair of rubber boots or wear some waterproof shoes. This will prevent you from getting your feet or legs drenched.
There are a plethora of waterproof shoes but the most common ones are the typical rain rubber boots. These come in all long or short styles and have multitudes of colors to match any outfit.
I love to wear some sort of rubber platform sneakers to run errands and that is enough to run me by through the rainy summer days. If you live in areas where the rain is much harsher or there tends to be a lot of flooding then rain boots are your friends!
Light Layers
Layering allows you to adjust your clothing based on the temperature and precipitation. Wearing lightweight layers allows your body not to overheat and to provide the protection it needs from getting drenched.
You can layer on a thin shirt with a trench coat and or a thin rain jacket and it makes for the perfect summer rainy-day outfit. For pants, you might want to try nylon or polyester pants. Denim can dry fast if it’s a small amount of rain however, if it’s a lot of water then you might need to change out of your jeans.
I love to layer on lightly for these types of rainy months and I sometimes love to layer on a thin long sleeve because moving from the rain into a cold office or retail store can feel very cold.

Caps or Hats
Wearing caps or hats is more of an option when you don’t have an umbrella readily available. Caps and hats have specific scenarios that would be beneficial to wear them. However, for the most part, a jacket or an umbrella will do just fine.
Doing outdoor activities near water or in rainy areas is where a cap or hat can be most useful. Hiking and golfing are some activities where you might want to take a waterproof cap in case it sprinkles. If you’re ever in a scenario where the winds are high and you can’t carry an umbrella then a waterproof hat would be necessary.
Waterproof Bag
I highly recommend taking a duffle bag or a backpack that is waterproof to protect your belongings. These large bags are great to carry all your needs and to help prepare for any downpours. You can also bring extra clothes in your backpack or duffle bag to change in especially, if you are working far away from home.
It’s always good to have a backpack that has a compartment to store your shoes just in case they get wet and this also separates them from other items. I like to also put my shoes in a plastic bag or if there are napkins around I will place them on the bottoms of the shoes so that it won’t ruin my bag or backpack.
Summer is filled with rainy days and carrying the essentials facilitates the rainy season outings. Whether you live in an area that is always raining or hardly getting any rain it’s always great to be prepared for the rainy season. I hope this guide helped you find some inspiration for planning out your next summer rainy day!
